The “Gaslamp District, San Diego” poster is a tribute to one of California’s most adored neighborhoods.

Rising from 16 square-blocks in downtown San Diego, you’ll find the historic Gaslamp District where Victorian-era buildings and modern skyscrapers stand side by side, housing more than 100 of the city’s finest restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and retails shops, as well as offices and residential/work lofts.

Under the sparkling night sky on a cool California evening, the Gaslamp District transforms into a sophisticated cosmopolitan playground as thousands come out in style for a night of fine dining, craft cocktails, live theatre, music and dancing.

Years ago, San Diego’s center was Old Town. In the late 19th century, optimistic visionaries such as Alonzo Horton and William Heath suggested a move to the Gaslamp District. Turning a port city that acted as a “red light district” into a friendly neighborhood took time, effort, energy and almost 100 years. The charm of the brick sidewalks, the antique likes of the buildings’ Victorian architecture and the brilliant glow of the artificial gas lamps continue to contribute to the historical feel of the new city center.

I am excited to include Gaslamp District, in a portfolio of important cities, towns and neighborhoods I have illustrated over the last 20 years. As an artist, I have created edition posters celebrating cities and regions around the country. Some of those include San Francisco, Boston, Davis, Silicon Valley, Sacramento, Watsonville, Lake Tahoe, Route 128, Half Moon Bay, Ventura, New York City, Wall Street, Palo Alto, Pasadena, the Tannery Arts Center and Santa Cruz just to name a few.

I first became a fan of Gaslamp District, 10 years ago when I had the privilege to interview Ingrid Croce who owned Croce’s at the time for a documentary I was filming on California. She provided me insights and stories about her history with this fascinating neighborhood.
